Our Story
The Hornby Island Athletic Association (HIAA) is a volunteer-run, not-for-profit organization founded in 1985 by local residents who believed community wellbeing starts with access, connection, and shared space.
Operating Joe King Park, HIAA provides essential year-round infrastructure that supports physical health, mental wellbeing, and social connection for residents and visitors of all ages, incomes, and backgrounds.
Our work goes beyond recreation. We recognize that health is shaped by everyday conditions: access to food, hygiene, warmth, movement, and meaningful social contact. Through recreation facilities, community programming, food access initiatives, laundry and shower services, and informal gathering spaces, HIAA helps reduce isolation and supports dignity and belonging, especially during the winter months.
Sustained through memberships, donations, and support from the Comox Valley Regional District and community funders, HIAA continues to evolve in response to local needs.
